Sweden is half the land size of NSW and with a total of 10M in population. But despite its size, Sweden has quite a few interesting tech innovations. You probably know about most of them, but did you know that they’re all Swedish?
CANDYCRUSH SAGA |CO-FOUNDER: SEBASTIAN KNUTSSON
Candy Crush Saga released their first game on April 12, 2012. Today it has 293M monthly active global users and the estimated download is 823 million times. 33% of all mobile gamers in the world play Candy Crush (!). Candy Crush Saga is the most downloaded game of all time on iOS, according to mobile app analytics firm App Annie. The entire series reportedly made over $1.5 billion in revenue for King in 2018. King recently celebrated the trillionth game of Candy Crush being played.
SPOTIFY | FOUNDERS: DANIEL EK & MARTIN LORENTZON
As of 2018, Spotify accounted for 36% of streaming music subscribers worldwide followed by Apple music with 19%. In 2018, Spotify reported over 70M paid subscribers worldwide. As such, subscribers account for less than half of Spotify’s user base of 159M monthly global users.
Fun fact: Spotify launched in Sweden in 2006 and I’ve been working with them since the beginning. The Australian reps think it’s pretty funny that I normally know more about their product then they do.
MINECRAFT | FOUNDER: MARKUS “NOTCH” PERSSON
Mojang, the company that built Minecraft, was started by creator Markus “Notch” Persson. Minecraft is more than just a game. Minecraft has spawned a number of spin-offs, a seemingly endless range of merchandise, and even an entire convention dedicated to it.
With more than 107 million copies sold since 2011, it’s already the second highest selling video game of all time behind Tetris, which had a near three-decade head start. Minecraft has 91M monthly active users which essentially means that they have enough active users to fill Australia over three times!
SKYPE | FOUNDER: NIKLAS ZENNSTRÖM
Skype was founded in 2003. The idea for Skype came to Niklas as he was picking up huge phone bills calling his colleagues across Europe. After one month Skype had 1M users. By January 2005 they had 20M active users and were gaining 5 new users every second. eBay bought Skype in September 2005 for $3.5B. Today WhatsApp is the dominant messaging app with 1.5B monthly active users, while Skype “only” have 300M monthly global active users.
ACAST|FOUNDERS: MÅNS ULVESTAM & KARL ROSANDER
Acast launched in 2014. Acast is a podcast platform which can target advertising based on location, time and any personal data they have, on any listening device. Globally they have 141M listeners per month with a total of 3,600 podcasts. In Australia, Acast has 4 million unique listeners per month and it keeps growing.
Another fun fact: I have been working with Acast since they launched and I’m actually friends with the Swedish guy, Henrik Isaksson that launched Acast in Australia. (Same guy that brought Spotify to Aussies)
